パトロン? セカンドナイン?|マスターズの気になる用語集

たしかゴルフネットワークの「Live from Masters」を観ているときだったと思うけど, キャスターやコメンタリーが「フロントナイン,バックナイン」のかわりに「ファーストナイン,セカンドナイン」と言っているのが気になりました。もしかして前者は和製英語で後者が英語での本当の言い方なのかしら?と思ったけど,調べてみたら,これって「マスターズ用語」のひとつみたいですね。「ギャラリー」を「パトロン」と言うみたいに。

ということで,いまさらですが,その用語集です。「A to Z」とまではいかないけれど,アルファベット順に。

拙訳

  • アーメンコーナー。オーガスタナショナルの後半,11番ホールの2打目,12番ホール,13番ホールからなる場所。
  • バトラーキャビン。日曜日の夜に,優勝者に対してグリーンジャケットが授けられる場所。また,CBSのTV撮影場所。
  • チャンピオンズディナー。マスターズ開催直前の火曜夜に催されるイベントで,前年のマスターズチャンピオンが主催し,メニューを決める。多くの場合,その優勝者の故郷を代表する食べ物や,自らの好物を選ぶ。
  • クローズ・ネスト。マスターズのクラブハウスの上にあり,競技に参加しているアマチュアが招待されて大会の週に滞在するところ。
  • アイゼンハワー・ツリー。オーガスタナショナルの17番ホールにあった,ゴルフ界でももっとも有名であろう木。元アメリカ大統領のドワイト・D・アイゼンハワーがしばしば打ちこんだ。今冬のアイスストームでダメージを受け,取り除かれた。
  • ファーストナイン。「フロントナイン」ではない。オーガスタナショナルの前半の9ホールは,こう呼ばれる。
  • グリーンジャケット。マスターズの優勝に授けられるジャケット。優勝者は,勝利から1年間,着ることを許され,翌年クラブに返却する。
  • マグノリア・レーン。ワシントン・ロードからオーガスタ・ナショナル・ゴルフクラブへと続く,マグノリアの木に囲まれたメイン・エントランス。
  • パトロン。「ファン」でも「ギャラリー」でもなく,マスターズの観戦に訪れた人々は,パトロンと呼ばれる。
  • レイズ・クリーク。11番・12番・13番ホールのアーメンコーナーを流れる小川。
  • セカンドナイン。「バックナイン」のかわりに,オーガスタナショナルの後半9ホールは,こう呼ばれる。

  • Butler Cabin - Where the Green Jacket is awarded to the Masters Champion on Sunday night. Also where CBS Broadcasts from during their TV coverage
  • Champions Dinner - Event held Tuesday night of Masters week hosted by the reigning Masters Champion with the menu of his choice. Champions often choose a meal from their respective country or their favorite foods
  • Crow's Nest - Atop the Masters' clubhouse where amateurs competing are invited to stay during the week of the tournament
  • Eisenhower Tree - Perhaps the most famous tree in golf and frequent target of former President Dwight D. Eisenhower on the 17th hole at Augusta National. The famed tree was damaged during an ice storm and taken down earlier this year
  • First 9 - Not the front 9, the first nine holes at Augusta National are called the First 9
  • Green Jacket - Awarded to the winner of the Masters Tournament, who is allowed to wear the jacket the year he is the reigning champion and returns it to the club the following year
  • Magnolia Lane - The Magnolia tree lined main entrance to Augusta National Golf Club from Washington Road
  • Patron - Don't call them fans or the gallery, those attending and watching the golf this weekend are referred to as Patrons
  • Rae's Creek - The creek running through holes 11, 12 and 13 at Amen Corner
  • Second 9 - Not the back 9, the second nine at Augusta National are called the Second 9
