2013: The Phrankenwood

*1:We don’t know the exact number of PGA Tour Hall of Famers who have patents on golf clubs, but we know at least one does, Phil Mickelson. The left-hander is famous for not only having one of the greatest short games in the history of golf, he is constantly tinkering with his gear.
*2:Most PGA Tour pros travel with their standard 14 clubs and bring a few backups in case something happens. For instance, nearly everyone brings a backup driver and a backup putter. Some players swap out 2-irons and 5-woods based on the course conditions too, but Mickelson takes things to another level. He often travels with between 23 and 25 clubs, including multiple woods, irons, wedges and putters.
*3:Mickelson is also open to trying unconventional combinations of clubs after studying courses and developing his strategy. So take a look back at some of the more memorable gear highlights in Phil Mickelson’s career.
*4:The week before the 2006 Masters, Mickelson showed up the BellsSouth Classic and used two Callaway drivers to lap the field and win by 13 shots. Both drivers were Callaway Big Bertha Fusion FT-3s with 9.5-degrees of loft, but one was 45″ and the other was 46″. Internal weighting. Extra weight in the heel and a 1-inch longer shaft left Mickelson hit a draw (a left to right shot) with the same swing that produced a fade in his 45-inch driver. The following week, he used the two-driver system to win his second Masters.
*5:As we saw during the 2020 U.S. Open, Winged Foot Golf Club’s West Course has some extremely deep bunkers that defend supremely-fast greens. To handle that combination, Mickelson arrived at the 2006 U.S. Open with a 64-degree wedge. Nowadays, we see some pros use wedges with more than 60 degrees of loft, but Mickelson was the first star to play a super high-lofted wedge in a major event.
*6:What would Ben Hogan have thought about Mickelson taking on Colonial Country Club in 2008 using five wedges? To make room for the extra wedge, a 52-degree gap wedge, Mickelson played without a 3-wood one day and without a 6-iron on another. After seeing the course and realizing how many drivers he could hit off the tee, he felt the strategy could work and it did. Phil won the tournament.
*7:The rough at Torrey Pines was especially thick and lush in 2008, so Mickelson decided to play the U.S. Open without a driver, opting to use a strong-lofted 3-wood and a hybrid off the tee in an effort to hit more fairways. The strategy backfired and Mickelson wound up missing fairways while also sacrificing distance. After two rounds, he put a driver into his bag.
*8:At Bethpage Black in 2009, Mickelson arrived with a prototype hybrid club that he designed with Callaway’s Roger Cleveland. The club was designed with extra bounce, to enable it to work through the thick rough that lined the course.
*9:A few weeks before the start of the 2012 PGA Championship at Kiawah, Mickelson was in Callaway’s PGA Tour van and saw a putter he did not recognize. It was a prototype designed for the Japanese market and never meant to be released in the United States. Mickelson tried it, liked it and put it into play at Kiawah.
*10:In the days leading up to the 2013 Masters, Mickelson hinted that he had a mystery club ready to help him take on Augusta National. The club turned out to be a supercharged fairway wood that he dubbed the Phrankenwood.
*11:The official name was the X Hot Phrankenwood and it had 12 degrees of loft with similar construction to Callaway’s 13-degree X Hot 3Deep 3-wood. It was also 44.5″ long.
*12:During his warm-up before the final round of the 2017 Northern Trust, the first event in the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs, Mickelson used two different putters on the practice green. He decided to use the blade putter that day.
*13:Like many pros, at several points during Mickelson’s career, he has blended different irons instead of playing a set of the same clubs. However, Phil being Phil, he often blends up to three different irons to create his set, as he did at the 2019 Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill. That week he had a Callaway X Forged UT, Callaway Epic Pro and Callaway Apex MB irons in the bag.
*14:If you think that 50-year-old Phil is kidding when he says that he wants to hit bombs and “hellacious seeds” off the tee, think again. Mickelson had Callaway design a 6-degree Epic Speed driver for him before the start of the 2021 PGA Championship. After adjusting the hosel, it has a playing loft of 5.5 degrees.
