*8:In the intervening two decades since his first trip here, it’s increasingly difficult to attract the game’s superstars (a wildly overused term) to our shores. Long gone are the days of the Big Three – Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player – coming here regularly to play our biggest events and it’s not particularly difficult to understand why. This generation of players make so much money in the post-Tiger era and why come all the way here at the end of a long season, even if it is to play one of the world’s greatest courses?
*9:Either way, watching great players play Royal Melbourne and the examination set by Alister MacKenzie and Alex Russell is always fascinating. MacKenzie was a great admirer of the American legend Walter Hagen, and he made courses rewarding great flair, imagination and a cool-headed short game. MacKenzie detested narrow fairways bordered by long grass. Rather, his philosophy was to give players space to play, and no man was more suited to the demands of Royal Melbourne than Hagen’s incarnation, the great Severiano Ballesteros. The Spaniard won his ‘grand slam’ by becoming the only man to have won at Royal Melbourne, (MacKenzie’s best course) Augusta National, (his most famous course) and St Andrews (his favourite course.)
*10:Ballesteros, along with his great rivals, Greg Norman Tom Watson and Nick Faldo, largely played Royal Melbourne with a driver. The insanity of modern distance has likely taken the driver out of McIlroy’s hands on all but a few holes. The two par 5s, 14th (4 West) and 17 (17 East) are straight enough and wide enough to give the long hitters room, as is the finishing par 4, 18 East.
*11:As it was for Tiger Woods at the 2019 Presidents Cup, the rest of the tee shots will be either fairway woods and long irons. From there, the test has always been to shape approach shots on the ideal trajectory that land on the right parts of the green and bounce and run to the hole. In the wind it often takes a great shot to get inside of 20 feet, and it starkly contrasts with the golf we so often see on our televisions where there is neither wind nor fire in the greens, where hitting irons shots close to the flags has none of the complications or interest of Royal Melbourne.
*12:The crowd numbers will be akin to 2019, making watching McIlroy somewhat exasperating. The course, finally back to the original 1959 Composite routing, is big and sprawling with the holes often far apart and, unlike more compact Sandbelt courses, fewer people set out to watch all 18 holes.
*13:Playing tournaments there it always seemed fewer spectators went down to the middle four holes from the ninth back to the clubhouse. Given they make up the most difficult run of holes on the course, it mightn’t be the worst idea to pick Rory up on the ninth tee.
*14:Having said that, there was nothing quite so memorable or thrilling than watching Ballesteros play the short, par-4 eighth (just up the hill from the clubhouse) with his driver when every sensible player was hitting a 3-wood or a long iron to the top of the hill and pitching from there.
*15:Given it’s one of the very best short par 4s in the world, why would you deny yourself the chance to see how Rory answers MacKenzie’s question?
*16:Whilst McIlroy is the star player, the golf course, one I first saw in 1972 and played two years later, holds at least equal billing. Indeed, Huggan is flying all the way from Scotland just to watch McIlroy play the course.
*17:Whilst I’ve played countless rounds over all three (Composite, West and East) courses it’s still thrilling. For many – especially kids eager to see their hero – it will be their first time on the property.
*18:Now, I don’t expect teenagers to be out there studying the architecture but it is such an amazing place that a rudimentary understanding of its significance is a good start.
*19:For those with a love for the game, the memory of shots you see champions play at Royal Melbourne last a lifetime.
